The Shift: Radio Network Functions as IT Applications

Mar 23, 2026 ยท 0 min read
Abstract
The telco industry has been on a cloudification journey for over a decade. In the context of Radio Access Networks (RAN), this deep transformation is primarily driven by Open RAN initiatives. This talk illustrates how RAN is gradually evolving towards IT architecture. Key synergies between Sylva and OCUDU open-source projects are driving this transformation. Sylva provides a telco-grade cloud stack, enabling scalable and reliable cloud infrastructure. And OCUDU focuses on developing network functions with full adoption of cloud-native patterns, fostering innovation and interoperability. Focusing then on O-Cloud, the cloud layer of Open RAN, Sylva is proposing an ambitious approach with Cluster Template description based on Cluster API, delivering a full declarative approach. A live demo will showcase a FluxCD GitOps deployment of an Open RAN Distributed Unit (DU) network function on Sylva Telco Cloud, relying on IT deployment workflows in a multi nodes architecture.
